Post updated on 12 April 2014. Scroll down for recent updates, trailers and pictures included.
Joe Flanigan announced early October, at the EMC Collectormania convention in London, he had joined the cast of Metal Hurlant Chronicles, a French-UK action series based on the French sci-fi comic book, also known as Heavy Metal in US.
Joe will be shooting in Brussels, early November.
From what we’ve found online, we assume each of the announced cast (Joe included) is to guest-star one half-hour episode of the 24 approved so far, but then again we may be wrong. In Joe’s own words, “Metal Hurlant is cool, like Bladerunner, but with even more bad guys”.
Sony Pictures Television acquired the series, and airing is due to start in April 2012, in several countries of Europe, as two twelve-episode seasons (second season to start airing in November 2012).
From the producers WE-production and Panini UK Media, a dark and spine-chilling teaser can be found here.
UPDATE 29 October 2011
With the constant and invaluable help of @GracieValenti, we are now in a position to add new elements to the Metal Hurlant shooting due to start next week in Belgium, according to this tweet by @MetalHurlantTV.
‘la belle and Joe Flanigan – a couple of galactic outlaws in the pursuit of their destiny’
A teaser for episodes 1 and 2 was recently uploaded by MetalHurlantTV on youtube. It hints to a lot of action (just as Joe wants) although it looks rather far from his previous projects (which is always good, as we’d like to see him in as many and as different roles as possible). Most importantly, we get to see his name in the end credits.
Another friend of FlanInfo’s, vida_boheme managed to dig out what might be the original story of the episode. Trying to avoid major spoilers, this is what we made of it:
Joe’s character would be a space hunter (Hondo), whose dying friend shares with him a secret – the place where the Hydras live (mythical creatures that know a man’s fate and can tell him the day of his death). He travels to the distant planet and learns he doesn’t have too much to live. There’s also a girl, Skarr (a thief he rescues and teams up with), a heist and their unwillingness to accept their destiny.
It surely captured our attention!
We’ll continue to update this post, stay tuned.
UPDATE 30 October 2011
Justine Veillot, producer of the show, confirmed today via twitter that Joe and Kelly Brook will play Hondo and Skarr, the mercenary and the beautiful thief, characters identified in vida_boheme’s post.
UPDATE 2 November 2011
Yesterday Joe Flanigan tweeted this page from the comic book relevant to his episode (in French), we also offer you a translation in English (click on the image to enlarge).
And today Joe tweeted again from set:

New pictures taken during the production of the show keep appearing from time to time and we are lucky enough to have friends digging them out. The latest was posted by Vincent Gatinaud in his facebook album and shared by @MajorBerry on her LiveJournal (you rock, Berry, for finding and spreading these gems!)

UPDATE 1 December 2011
Another episode (Shelter Me) is currently being shot, as announced by the producers with this tweet.
Apparently the first two episodes of the first batch of six (first season) have been already shot and aired in 2010, as part of the pilot episode (Red Light and Cold Hard Facts). The four remaining are as follows:
- Master of Destiny, with Joe Flanigan and Kelly Brook, to be aired in May 2012
- Shelter Me, with James Marsters and Michelle Ryan, to be aired in May 2012
- Pledge of Anya
- King’s Crown
The cast announced so far includes: Rutger Hauer, Scott Adkins, Michael Jai White, David Belle, Anthony Kavanagh, Darren Shahlavi, Matt Mullins.
Some more background on Metal Hurlant, as found on Rutger Hauer’s official site.
Each episode is 26 minutes long and is composed of one story involving action, heroic fantasy and science fiction.
About Magazine Metal Hurlant
It is a science fiction comic book created in 1974 by authors and drawers Dionnet, Druillet and Moebius and published by Les Humanoïdes Associés. Right from the first issue, Métal Hurlant distinguishes itself from the other existing comic books by its audacious content, so much by its graphics than its scenarii. The comic standards are changed: comics now revolve around space, violence, sex, but also poetry. An American version was created, too: some Heavy Metal readers will become famous science fiction movie directors: George Lucas, Ridley Scott, Georges Miller. Authors such as Moebius, Corben, Jodowrosky cooperate on their movies, giving birth to great features such as Alien, Tron, Willow. In the 80’s, under the influence of Philippe Manoeuvre, the magazine gains a funky spirit directly inspired from the music scene. Metal Hurlant then becomes a lifestyle magazine of a whole generation. Metal Hurlant Chronicles TV series continues in that way.
UPDATE 6 December 2011
News from Guillaume Lubrano: shooting for the first four episodes done and currently in post production, last episode of the season to be shot by end January.
UPDATE 14 December 2011
‘Master of Destiny’ cast on imdb has been updated with Lidia Aviles.
UPDATE 16 December 2011
An interesting financing scheme has been put forward by the producers, namely anyone having the possibility to financially support the production with contributions via ulule.com. They aim to collect at least 4000 USD by March 2012, and if you support the project by credit card, your participation will be fully repaid, with no fees, if they fail to meet this target. One may choose from several levels of contribution (with corresponding benefits for each level), starting as low as 15 USD (check the “Give, Get” column on the right hand side of the ulule.com website).
As of today, they have reached about 10% already (8 supporters).
The announcement includes also the description of the series, pictures, a teaser and a summary update of the production status to date (5 of the first 6 episodes have been shot and work on the special effects is still in progress).
This is what the funds are for (exact quote):
We are a small and young independant French production team with ambition.
We shot 5 episodes of the series, with wonderful stars et technical team but we need funds for the last episode of the first season and to complete the special effects.
We want that the quality of pictures and special effects to be vey high because we want to honor the spirit of the comics.
UPDATE 30 December 2011
The financing appeal launched two weeks ago has reached 28% of its target, with 16 supporters and still 77 days to go.
A bit of research back in the series history: in March Sony Pictures bought the series (to be aired in 22 European countries) and a video interview (in French) of the producer/director Guillaume Lubrano covers mainly the following:
- their difficulties in financing the production (due to the “notorious lack of support” from the French networks)
- their vocation to go internationally, via an “international scifi quality” of the visual
- their faithfulness to the original concept of the “bande dessinee”
- their commitment to deliver the first episodes in January 2012
- the originality of the series coming also from targeting it very precisely to a certain audience (unlike the majority of the other French productions)
- the benefit of having access to many independent stories prevents the danger of the series being “feuilletonante” (the viewer having to closely follow on the continuity of action in order to understand the story).
UPDATE 5 January 2012
Fans’ support has reached 31%, with 18 supporters and 71 days to go.
SECOND UPDATE 5 January 2012
By the end of the day, fans’ support had reached 39%, with 20 supporters and 71 days to go. Looks like they’re steadily getting there… The producers e-mailed some news updates to the supporters of the project and shared them also on the financing website.
UPDATES 8 January 2012
- 23 supporters, 44% of the target set by the producers.
- Guillaume Lubrano keeps us updated on twitter with the work on two other episodes Shelter Me and Pledge of Anya:
First edit of pledge of anya looks fine, still work to do, but it should really have some gorgeous shots once cgi will be finished.
Shelter me editing should be finished on tuesday…
- On his Facebook page, Mr Lubrano posted on Thursday 5 January that the producers’ team has strengthen with the addition of the group DUPUIS and the production company NEXUS as co-producers for the series.
Nous sommes heureux de vous annoncer officiellement la venue du groupe DUPUIS et celle de la société de production NEXUS en tant que co-producteurs sur la série METAL HURLANT CHRONICLES :))

Its international format is episodes of 26 minutes with six episodes per season (season 1 to be available in Fall 2011, season 2 will be available in 2012,) in original English language.
- From this article by BrainDamagedFr, we find out a bit more on the Metal Hurlant mythology: The action takes places in 2312. Each episode features an independent story, the link of them all being a mysterious meteorite, Metal Hurlant, that can travel through space and time.

Guillaume Lubrano, 10 Feb, 11:47 AM Well departing for luchon Tv festival where we re going to screen some clips from the first season of metal.
- Guillaume Lubrano seems pleased with the script, as he is tempting us with one of Joe’s line (which he hasn’t shared with us though).
- The financing scheme is still short of reaching its target, with less than one month before the deadline (15 March). Only 32 supporters showed up so far, and proceeds have reached no more than 58%. The producers regularly shared info and new pictures with the supporters on the ulule.com page. Two images from the “credits” album are to be found here below:
